My thesis examines the Roman army from a social perspective, drawing heavily on archaeological and sub-literary evidence, along with comparative and interdisciplinary approaches. I explore the lives not only of the soldiers, but of the various family members, slaves, and merchants who accompanied Roman armies and lived alongside them.
My previous work looked at the concept of monstrosity in the classical world, and the aesthetics of the grotesque - a topic which I explored in my teaching at the Ashmolean Museum.
