My doctoral project explores the symbolic importance of names (personal) in the Roman Republic. I am particularly interested in the function of names in the domestic, religious, and political life of the republican nobiles, the pervasion of aristocratic names in Roman culture, language and urban topography, as well as the importance of naming and being named in general. This project is partially built on my master’s thesis which explored various naming conventions in late Republican and early Imperial prose.
I am grateful to the China Oxford Scholarship Fund, especially to my benefactors the late Mr Brian Keelan and his widow Mrs Araceli Keelan.
