Dr Ine Jacobs

Academic Background

After completing a degree in Archaeology at Leuven (Belgium), I was awarded a grant from the Research Foundation Flanders to pursue a DPhil. The same foundation later supported my postdoctoral research as well as an extended research stay in Munich. During this period, I also took up the position of Lecturer in Roman Archaeology at the University of Brussels. In October 2013, I moved to Edinburgh as a Chancellor’s Fellow in Classics, and since January 2015 I have been the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Associate Professor of Byzantine Archaeology and Visual Culture at Oxford.

Research Interests
My research focuses on Roman and Byzantine architecture and urbanism, the experience and perception of built environments and their decoration, the long histories of display and reception of sites, statuary, and artifacts, as well as material religion. I have participated in excavations in Belgium, Italy, the Republic of North Macedonia, and Turkey, and has been Field Director of the Aphrodisias Excavations since 2016. I am currently publishing the results of the long-term excavations of the Tetrapylon Street and leading research in the House of Kybele sector.
