Dr Justine Potts

Academic Background

I read Classics as an undergraduate, and Ancient History as a graduate, at Balliol College, Oxford, before becoming Lecturer in Ancient History and Director of Studies in Classics at Regent’s Park College, Oxford, in 2018-19. I also studied at the University of Bologna, between masters and doctoral degrees.

Research Interests

My research focuses on the religious and intellectual history of the ancient world, especially the Roman Empire. I am interested in comparative history, and longue durée historiography. My doctoral thesis “Confession in the Greek and Roman world: a social and cultural history” is currently in the process of becoming a book. The central interest of this project was how and why a religious, social and cultural practice such as the confession of wrongdoing develops over time. My current research project looks at the rise of monotheism in the Roman Empire and in ancient South Arabia in a comparative perspective.

Research Keywords

Ancient Religion, Roman History, Roman Art and Archaeology, History of the Mediterranean, Reception, Late Antique History, Epigraphy, Early Church, City of Rome, Ancient South Arabia.

Teaching

I teach the Religions of the Greek and Roman World paper and a variety of Roman History options to Classics, CAAH and AMH students.
