I was born in Belfast and read classics at Clare College, Cambridge. Before moving to Oxford in 2011, I was Reader in Classical Art and its Heritage at The Courtauld Institute of Art in London, where I served as Acting Dean in 2010-11. Previously I taught at Cambridge and at Reading University, where I was Lecturer in Classics and Curator of the Ure Museum of Greek Archaeology.

My personal research mainly lies in the fields of ancient sculpture, Roman provincial art, ancient Greek textile art, and connections between different art traditions of ancient Eurasia. My publications include, Statues in Roman Society: Representation and Response (Oxford, 2003); The Social History of Roman Art (Cambridge 2008); A Catalogue of the Sculpture Collection at Wilton House (Oxford, 2020); and Gandharan Art and the Classical World: A Short Introduction (Oxford, 2023).
