Dr Anna Clark

Academic Background

I studied at St Andrews and moved to Oxford for doctoral work in Ancient History at Merton College. I have been at Christ Church since 2002 and an Official Student (Fellow) and University Lecturer since 2007.

Research Interests

My principal research interests lie in Roman history of the middle republican to early imperial period. I have written on historiography, epistolography and comedy, and on topics including what we would think of as religious, cultural, social and political history. I am currently interested in contributing to discussions of finding ways to describe Roman society without relying on such partially anachronistic categories (religious, cultural, political etc.), and am writing a book (Approaching Roman Society) that attempts to do this through a series of case studies.

Research Keywords

Roman history, city of Rome, historiography, epistolography, Roman comedy, ontology.

Teaching

I teach all the Roman papers in Ancient History for Classics, CAAH, and Ancient and Modern History.
